Shapiro pool drowning in debt, forced to close

CHICO, Calif. - On Thursday night the five-member board of the Chico Area Recreation and Park District voted unanimously to close down Shapiro pool effective in 2015.

It's been a part of the community since 1956, so it was a difficult decision but one that the board decided ultimately had to made due to financial considerations, as repairs on the pool would have totaled more than $1.5 million.

"The equipment is deteriorating, the pipes and filter system are eroding," said CARD General Manger Steve Visconti.  "Any major repair we do now would just trigger additional repairs that would be so costly that we couldn't afford to do it."

Shapiro Pool, which is on the campus of Chico Junior High School, was open during the summer time and was used by more than 1,500 swimmers.
