Story ends for Lyon Books, store goes out of business

CHICO, Calif. - After 12 years in business, Lyon Books on Main Street in downtown Chico is going out of business.

Regular customers are saddened by the news.

"Anytime we need to get anyone a gift, we come to Lyon Books," said Stephanie Richards. "They offer us a service that no one else in town offers."

Lyon Books was known for helping promote local authors, and taking great pride in the history of Chico.

"We have a big local author following," said Scott Raby, one of six employees.  "And we have writing workshops that are helpful to the community as well."

Longtime and loyal customers said local bookstores like Lyon Books are still important, especially in an age in which more and more reading is done online.

"I like the whole ambiance of being in a bookstore, and running into like-minded people rather than buying stuff in front of my computer," said Bill Unger, a customer of Lyon Books.

"Whenever I hear that a bookstore is closing, I think that it is a tremendous loss," said Heidi Pace, another loyal Lyon customer.

The owner of the bookstore, Heather Lyon, is helping her employees find new jobs before the store closes for good, which will come shortly after inventory is gone.

Lyon Books is offering deep discounts on merchandise in its close-out sale.
