Young Woman Hides as Intruder Kicks in Door, Robs Home

OROVILLE, Calif. - A Butte County woman was home alone when an intruder broke in.   Ashley Heines, 21, was able to lock herself in the bathroom and call 911.

Investigators said Dean Stuart, 51, came to a home in the 1300 block of 14th Street in Oroville on Wednesday at 4:25 p.m.

Heines did not want to be interviewed, but her father Tim Kuntz explained what happened next.

She heard someone kicking in the back door, locked herself in the bathroom and called 911.

"By the time she ran down the hallway, he was already in the house," said Kuntz.

Kuntz said Stuart went through the entire house and took a jar of quarters and a ring that Heines bought at Wal-Mart for $10.

"At 51 years old, I mean what a dirt bag!" said Kuntz.

Once the man realized Heines was home,  took off on his bike and headed down Euclid Avenue trying to get away from authorities.

"After a brief struggle with our deputies he was brought into custody," said Sergeant Ryan Gsell of the Butte County Sheriff's Office.

The Butte County Sheriff's Office said this is not the first time the suspect has robbed this neighborhood.

"He was linked to an April 28 burglary and the victims in that case also identify him being responsible," said Sgt. Gsell.  "That was just a couple of weeks ago."

In that case the victims arrived at their home in the 1200 block of Grand Avenue to find a man in the process of burglarizing their home.  The suspect held the victims at gunpoint and continued to rob them.  The suspect fled on a silver and blue bicycle with a damaged seat.

After his arrest Wednesday, those victims were able to identify Stuart as the person who robbed them at gunpoint.

Dean Stuart's criminal record shows he has six first degree counts of residential robbery and six counts false imprisonment by violence.

The sheriff's office confirms that he recently finished serving a prison sentence.   He is held at the Butte County Jail without bail.   Deputies said he was on parole at the time of the break-in.
