SACRAMENTO, Calif. -

A Caltrans maintenance worker was killed on his way to a memorial at the State Capitol, a memorial meant to honor two other Caltrans workers who had recently died.

The worker is 50-year-old Dean Patton.

Caltrans said a car ran a red light at the intersection of Highway 99 and Riego Rd. in Sutter County, hitting Patton, who was riding a motorcycle.

He died on the scene.

He had taken the day off to make the trip to Sacramento and was in a pack of about a dozen Caltrans riders.

California Highway PatrolĀ  is still investigating the crash.

All traffic lights at the intersection were believed to be working properly.
