UPDATE: Driver in fiery Interstate 5 crash has died from his injuries
A frightening crash on Interstate 5 left a driver with major injuries late Monday night. Now after more than two days in the hospital, the CHP confirms that driver has died from his injuries.
It happened around 11:30 p.m. Monday along northbound Interstate 5 near the Hilltop Drive overcrossing in Redding.
According to the CHP, a 2004 Honda driven by a 24-year-old from Shasta Lake drifted off the road. Hit a tree, overturned, hit a larger tree then caught on fire.
CHP officer Mike Cheeseman just happened to be seconds away. He drove up, put the fire out and found the driver partially ejected through the windshield.
With the help of paramedics, the driver was pulled from the car and taken to Mercy Medical Center. The driver was not wearing a seat belt.
The driver's name was not released, pending notification of next of kin.
