The Butte County courthouse had a busy day. Two separate cases involving child abuse were continued, but a man convicted of committing lewd acts with a child was sentenced to six years in state prison.
Child molester gets 6 years in prison
Thomas Lewis was convicted of molesting a 3-year-old girl at his wife's Chico daycare center,Grandma Linda’s, last March.
The district attorney’s office said the probation department told the court that Lewis was a risk to the community if he was granted probation.
Lewis was sentenced to six years in state prison. He will serve 85 percent of his sentence before he's up for parole.
Trial continued in alleged child/elder abuse
David Barber was in for his preliminary hearing on charges of torturing an 8-year-old boy in Oroville a few weeks ago.
He was also scheduled to be sentenced for abusing an elderly man diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Both of Barber's cases were continued because his attorney needs more time to prepare a defense.
David Barber will be back in court March 19.
Sentencing postponed for man in child beating death
Michael Dollar pleaded no contest in January to beating and killing his girlfriend's son, Deagan Jackson, in November of 2010 in their Oroville apartment.
He was set to be sentenced to 11 years in state prison, but his defense attorney requested another attorney take over the case before proceeding with the sentencing.
It's unclear when Dollar will be back in court.
