UPDATE: CHP officers identify fatal hit-and-run victim hit near West Valley High School
California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal hit-and-run in the area of Happy Valley Rd. and Lucerne Way near West Valley High School.
According to CHP, the victim of the accident was a 61-year-old female bicyclist named Mariana Contreras, of Cottonwood. Her next of kin have been notified.
Contreras was ejected from her bicycle after being hit from behind by a Ford Mustang being driven by a 17-year-old male.
Contreras was going northbound on Happy Valley Road on the right shoulder at an undetermined speed where the Mustang was traveling northbound as well.
For unknown reasons, the Mustang appeared to have drifted to the right, striking the Contreras from behind and fatally injuring her.
The juvenile Mustang driver fled the scene to a residence in the area, but his car was found by CHP aircraft. Officers contacted the 17-year-old and arrested him for felony hit and run.
No alcohol is suspected at this point.
KRCR News Channel Seven confirmed the suspect is a student at West Valley and we have obtained pictures of him being arrested at his home on Cloverdale Road.
However we have decided to blur his face and not use his name because he is a minor and the case has not yet been turned over to the DA's office.
The teen is being charged with felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence.
