Cooling centers open in response to excessive heat warning
Due to an excessive heat warning in effect for much of Shasta County, public cooling centers will be open in several locations from Monday through Thursday.
The cooling centers will be open from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. and will be staffed by American Red Cross volunteers who will provide drinks and snacks.
The current cooling center locations are as follows:
St. James Lutheran Church -- 2500 Shasta View Dr. (church staff on site at 8 a.m.)
Shasta District Fairgrounds -- 1890 Briggs St. (Fairgrounds staff on site at 8 a.m.)
City of Shasta Lake
John Beaudet Community Center -- 1525 Median Ave.
Prolonged exposure to excessive heat can lead to heat-related illnesses including the most serious – heat stroke. Some health conditions such as obesity, fever, dehydration, heart disease, poor circulation, sunburn, certain medications, and alcohol or other drugs can increase the likelihood of heat-related illnesses or death.
