Cowboy Dutch Oven Cook Off draws hungry crowd
The Gold Nugget Museum’s 4th Annual Cowboy Dutch Oven Cook Off drew a hungry crowd to Paradise Saturday afternoon.
Teams battled it out to see who could make the best grub in old style Dutch ovens; just as the cowboy’s did—using only coals and cast iron cooking pots.
It was all a benefit for the Gold Nugget Museum and the Boy and Girls Club.
Contestants say they love Dutch oven cooking because it gets them outside with their friends and cooking in an old fashioned way.
“Dutch oven cooking is awesome,” says contestant Josiah Sandstrom. “You get to kick back, relax and just let it go. It's how the west was settled and, you know, it's fun to keep up California history.”
Desery Uhor, another contestant, says the cooking process is definitely different but that doesn’t mean you are limited in what you can do.
“What's amazing about Dutch ovens is the sky is the limit,” says Uhor. “I mean, you're imagination and your creativity can just make the most amazing flavors in your mouth. It's great.”
Judges awarded prizes to contestants for best bread, best dessert and best main course.
The public also voted on their favorite dish.
