Crews on the scene of train derailment near Shasta-Siskiyou County line
Crews are on the scene of a train derailment near the Shasta-Siskiyou County line.
It happened around 7 p.m. Thursday in the Dunsmuir and Cantara Loop area.
A Union Pacific train pulling 80 cars had seven empty lumber flatbed cars run off the tracks.
Crews are working to get things cleaned up and expect the line to fully re-open by 4 p.m. Friday.
Union Pacific brought in other equipment in response to the derailment.
A derailment in that same area in 1991 spilled pesticide into the Upper Sacramento River. That killed tens of thousands of native trout, and had an effect on the area's ecosystem for years.
As of now the cause of the accident is unknown.
