Deadly berries find their way to the Northstate
It's relatively unknown to the Northstate and if you don't know about it, it could kill you.
Common pokeweed has been found in the Northstate for the last 10 to 15 years. Eat it raw and you, or your pets or livestock could die.
Shasta County Deputy Agriculture Commissioner Paul Kjos said in addition to being located along the Sacramento River Trail in Redding, the weed can also be found along the freeway and Highway 299.
You can eat pokeweed, but with a lot of preparation. Polk salad is popular in the South.
Kjos said that unless you know what you are doing, it's best to stay away from it.
If you see it, it's best to dig up its tuberous root.
It is not widespread in Shasta County, but birds are not bothered by pokeweed berries so they eat them and deposit them elsewhere.
