An investigation is underway after a 16-day-old infant from Corning died on Friday.
It's being called "suspicious" by police. Charges could be filed pending an autopsy. Tehama County District Attorney Greg Cohen said he expedited the autopsy to facilitate the investigation, with the procedure being started on the infant today.
When officers arrived at Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Red Bluff on Friday, the infant had already passed away.
Statements were made by one of the parents at the hospital that led officers to believe the death was suspicious.
Both parents are in their 30s
Cohen confirmed that the father was arrested on a parole matter and was released later that night. The mother also has three other children not in her custody.
Cohen also told us that child protective services was contacted twice about the environment that the infant was living in -- but that there wasn't enough proof of cause to take the child away from the mother.
