Eighth Graders Try to Raise 1.5 Million Pieces of Candy for Troops Overseas
Students at CK Price Middle School in Glenn County are gathering pieces of candy to send to troops overseas.
Their goal is 1.5 million pieces of candy and they are asking their friends, family and strangers to help.
The project began about a week ago but so far, students have collected more than 1,000 pieces of candy. They want to try to reach their goal of 1.5 million by the end of the school year.
Eighth grade students and the rest of their peers at CK Price Middle School are doing everything they can to raise candy for troops who are serving overseas.
“I really wanted to do a service learning project with this group of kids because I don't think they've experienced a project this way,” said Brittany Proctor, an eighth grade teacher.
Proctor got the idea from book, Milkweed, which she had her 30 students read earlier this year.
It is a story about young orphans living on the street of Warsaw, Poland during World War II.
“We searched it up and it was 1.5 million children that died... We should get a piece of candy for each child that died,” said eighth grade student, Mercedes Zambrano.
The project has garnered a lot of support.
“All of our class and our classmates kind of were all excited and each day we are getting closer and closer,” said Zambrano, who also said she believed the school would reach its goal.
Proctor said this is helping them learn a lot more than they can get from a book.
“They’re constantly learning new life skills that they wouldn't be learning sitting in the desk,” said Proctor.
One challenge the students face, as if raising more than a million pieces of candy wasn't enough, is the urge to fight off their sweet tooth.
“This piece of candy is my favorite and it's so hard not to take it!” said Zambrano.
Students have until the end of the school year which is just four weeks away. If you would like to donate you can get in touch with the school.
