CHICO, Calif. -

A Chico State student that was hit by a falling tree branch on campus Tuesday has died, according to C.S.U.C. Public Affairs Director, Joe Wills.

The victim, who has been only identified as a female student, was found by a witness who called  911.

Chico Fire was the first to respond at around 3:15 p.m..

Officials said the branch was 14 inches wide.

The incident happened near Lassen Hall at Chico State.

Chico State officials are now telling students to avoid walking near the trees in that area.

School officials did say that the trees were inspected prior to school starting. They are calling the incident a "freak accident."

Chico State will issue a post incident news release once next of kin notifications have been made.

Counseling is available to students or staff affected by this sad incident.
