A fire at an elementary school in Oroville destroyed the attic and forced the school to close down for at least one day.
It happened at the Sierra Del Oro Elementary School on the 2900 block of Wyandotte Avenue.
Fire officials from the Oroville Fire Department say the fire started in the attic above the gym at the center of the school. The call came in at 1:23 a.m. on Tuesday.
Crews from four agencies, including CAL FIRE Butte County, responded with several trucks and engines. The fire was contained after about an hour.
Preliminary estimates suggest the fire caused between $300,000 and $400,000 in damage. Officials say the entire attic will need to be replaced.
Crews stayed on scene for several hours for investigation and mop-up, and at least one truck stayed through the morning to monitor for hot spots.
The school will be closed Tuesday.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
