Historic Diestelhorst Bridge officially reopens in Redding
The ribbon-cutting for the grand re-opening of the Diestelhorst Bridge in Redding was held Thursday morning.
Some 50 to 70 people were there to enjoy opening ceremonies, including several members of the Redding City Council and other city leaders.
During the last year, work has been done to preserve the iconic bridge.
The bridge was the first reinforced concrete bridge across the Sacramento River.
Its completion in 1915 linked Shasta and Siskiyou counties.
Today, the bridge is known for its beauty and its access to hikers and bikers enjoying the area.
"From my perspective, from a recreational standpoint, from a historical standpoint – it's very important to the city. During construction we have employed a lot of people and looking at the finished product, it's a beautiful bridge," said Redding Public Works Director Brian Crane.
The project cost about $3.8 million to complete.
