Investigators revealed new details on Skyler Millner's death
The investigation into the death of a 13-year-old boy on the Skyway in Paradise is complete.
Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey announced Thursday that no charges will be filed in the death of Skyler Millner who was hit by a car back on May 31, 2013.
Reaction to this announcement was swift about Skyler's death. His dad said they do not agree with the decision that effectively finds the man driving the car not at fault for killing his son. The district attorney’s office says the evidence shows this is was an accident.
“He did run through the crosswalk without seeing any danger,” said Ramsey.
Ramsey along with investigators from the Paradise police department explained Thursday their reasoning in determining that the death of 13-year-old Skyler Millner was an accident.
“Other witnesses indicated that they had seen Skyler come up, jogging in place and had looked to his right looked to his left then back to his right before starting across,” said Ramsey.
Skyler was hit crossing the street next to Annie's Cafe' on the Skyway. Investigators used high tech cameras and lasers to reconstruct what happened.
A truck passes by Skyler and then, moments later Skyler runs out into crosswalk and is hit.
“That large truck is what we have to look at as blocking the line of sight for Skyler,” said Ramsey.
Millner was struck by Paradise Irrigation District director Ken Hunt who was driving his Mercedes sedan.
“Mr. Hunt didn't have sufficient time to react,” said Ramsey.
Ramsey says that there's no reason for Hunt to be charged with vehicular manslaughter because he didn't have enough time to stop.
“The facts that were presented whether there was a criminal case against Mr. Hunt and it is in our finding that there is no criminal case brought against Mr. Hunt,” said Ramsey.
We tried speaking to the Millner family after the press conference Thursday afternoon but their attorney advised them not to. Off camera, they did tell us they want justice for Skyler's death and this wasn't it.
