CHICO, Calif. -

Two people were taken to the hospital in Chico Wednesday afternoon after a big rig collided with a Volkswagen sedan.

The collision happened around 4 p.m. on northbound Highway 99 near the Highway 32 exit ramp.

The big rig collided with a red Volkswagen Jetta. There was heavy rain falling at the time, the first measurable rainfall in the Northstate in several weeks.

The big rig jackknifed, blocking both northbound lanes at one of the highway's busiest sections during the afternoon rush hour.

Two people in the Volkswagen were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.  The highway was blocked for about 30 minutes while emergency crews cleared the scene.

The CHP started letting a few cars through and both lanes reopened just before 5 p.m.
