Residents of the Colorado town of Lyons have been allowed past a National Guard roadblock today to salvage what they could from their homes.
A raging river surged through the town as communities in the Rocky Mountain foothills were inundated by flood waters last week. Residents on Thursday were allowed a few hours to inspect their homes and grab belongings before nightfall.
A local woman's granddaughter happened to be on a field trip in the flood zone.
She was one of 95 sixth graders in the Estes Park Area north of Boulder.
They were supposed to come home last Thursday but when the floods hit, no one could get in touch with them.
