Summer is starting and it’s important to protect your skin. Studies have shown that applying the correct sunscreen can protect you from developing skin cancer and can even keep you looking younger.
But knowing what kind of sunscreen to purchase can be a little tricky. So here is what you need to know, the highest sun protection factor or SPF might not be the right answer.
Experts say you should not purchase sunscreens with SPF greater than 50. Studies have shown that SPF 15 can block about 93 percent of all incoming rays. SPF 30 can block up to 97 percent and SPF 50 blocks 98 percent. Anything above SPF 50 offers the exact same protection, but you end up paying more for it.
So always go for the sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15 and a maximum of 50.
Also make sure labels list that it offers both UVA and UVB protection. And while sprays may be convenient, lotion offers more evenly distributed protection.
Water resistance is also important and always remember adults need to apply at least two ounces of lotion which is about the size of a shot glass and reapply often.
