Mothers Against Drunk Driving spoke out after the death of 20-year-old Natalie Slivka. Slivka was killed while riding in the backseat of a car driven by a young man who police said was under the influence June 7.
Zachary Gleason of Oregon was the man behind the wheel. The accident happened off of Hartnell Avenue near Argyle Road. Witnesses said the Subaru that Gleason was driving hit a utility pole at a high rate of speed.
Gleason tried to run away but was caught. Redding police said he admitted to driving the vehicle and drinking alcohol earlier in the day. Police also said records showed he'd been convicted of a DUI last year.
Two other passengers suffered minor injuries.Slivka was taken to Mercy Medical Center where she died shortly after the crash.
Anne-Berit Condit, an advocate for MADD has been a victim of drunk driving. She said she got hit by a drunk driver and says people really need to think about the consequences when getting into a car after drinking.
“Please don't drink and drive, there are choices out there, call a cab if you enjoy your adult beverages,” Condit said. “Or have a designated driver, these things could be so prevented if people just make the right choices it’s heart breaking and my heart goes out to the families.”
Gleason had a prior DUI arrest in 2013. He was booked into the Shasta county jail for second degree murder.
