A two-alarm structure fire at an apartment complex in Chico left one man badly injured Friday after he was forced to jump from a second story balcony to escape the flames.
The Redwood Apartments at Pillsbury and Cohasset Roads were billowing smoke as firefighters fought to contain the blaze around 2:00 p.m. A witness at the scene said one man barely escaped the fire.
"I came down stairs and he was hanging from his balcony," said Kyle Shaw-Reil. "His shoulders and the back of his head were on fire still. It looked like very serious burns, at least third degree, he had skin hanging off his back and his arms.
Shaw-Reil watched the man jump from the balcony, then assisted in putting out the flames on the injured man's back and head.
The unidentified victim was transported to a local hospital with major injuries.
Two upper floor units were damaged including the victim's home. The victim's unit sustained major damage and the unit next door suffered moderate damage.
Two lanes of Cohasset Road were closed near the corner of Cohasset and Pillsbury at the time of this writing.
Both the Chico Fire Department and CAL FIRE responded to the incident.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
