Mom tells how she scared off man attempting to kidnap daughter
A woman fought off a 24-year-old man in the streets of Oroville Saturday afternoon after police say he tried to take her 6-year-old daughter.
Laura Sandoval was walking home with her daughter near Harrison Stadium.
Sandoval said it was her motherly instincts that helped her stop this man from taking her daughter.
"My vibe went off and my intentions were to cut through the parking lot before we met up," said Sandoval.
The vibe came right about the time 24-year-old Jonathan Burg came up to her and yelled at her.
"He was like, 'I'm going to take your daughter. Give me your daughter!' And I said, 'Not today you're not!'"
Sandoval was walking home with her daughter she saw Burg coming towards her in a mysterious way and she pulled out her pepper spray.
"I think it spooked him," said Sandoval. "I didn't think he was going to fight back but that's my daughter, you're not taking my daughter."
Sandoval did not spray Burg, but he fled anyway. A nearby driver started chasing him, but lost him.
Police found him at Dahl's Motel off Feather River Boulevard Sunday around 9:30 p.m.
Then they called Sandoval.
"I just knew the feeling I had when I saw the picture," said Sandoval. "I knew it was him."
Burg was taken to the Butte County Jail and charged with attempted kidnapping.
Sandoval said she moved to Oroville from Washington to be closer to her family, but after this incident she said she's counting the days until she moves out.
