CHICO, Calif. -

A Chico man was killed after his motorcycle collided with a van driven by an 85-year-old woman.

The collision closed the Esplanade in North Chico for about four hours Thursday afternoon.

The accident happened around 4 p.m.

Chico Police said Ronnie Smith, 30, was northbound on his motorcycle on the Esplanade near Aspen Glen.

Maxine Landers, 85, was in an oncoming minivan, and turned in front of him.  The motorcycle rider tried to brake, then laid the motorcycle down on its side.  It slid into the right front wheel assembly of the van.

When officers arrived they found Smith trapped under the van.  They freed Smith with the help of witnesses.  He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
