CHICO, Calif. -

Neal Dow Elementary School has been recognized as a Renaissance Lighthouse School of Excellence, an honor that only a handful of schools nationwide have been awarded.

Neal Dow has been a part of the Renaissance School of Excellence program as a Lighthouse Candidate School since 2011. It was selected for the program on the basis of its strong effective leadership, dedicated teachers and high levels of parental involvement.

To earn this award, Neal Dow has met the program's specific goals in each of the following initiatives: the establishment of a one-to-one computing program for every student for kindergarten and up, individualized goal-setting for every student in the critical skills of reading, math and writing, on-the-job professional development for teachers and enhanced parental and community involvement in the school.

"Earning this award is a proud moment for all of the teachers, staff and students of Neal Dow ... We've worked hard to reach these goals and we have the results that also led us to receive California Distinguished School recognition," said Principal Marilyn Rees. "The effort that we've put into achieving this is something that our entire community and school district can be proud of."
