According to CHP, 42-year-old Sean Karjala of Redding was speeding on Highway 299 when a a 10-year veteran of the CHP tried to pull him over.
KRCR News Channel Seven was the only news crew only there after it happened on Saturday around 8:30 p.m. in Douglas City.
When the officer first tried to pull Karjala over, we are told he tried evading the officer by driving through a mobile home park.
He got back on Highway 299 and eventually stopped and parked at the Indian Creek Lodge.
The officer said he smelled marijuana and alcohol from the car so he asked Karjala to step out of his car. That's when CHP Officials said he tried to assault the officer with a hatchet.
At this point, the officer shot him.
Karjala tried to charge the officer again so the officer tackled him to the ground. Karjala was flown to Mercy Medical Center in Redding with gunshot wounds. He is in stable condition.
Once he is medically cleared, he will be booked for various charges, including attempted murder of a peace officer.
