REDDING, Calif. - A Northstate photographer snapped incredibly detailed images of the deadly Orland tour bus crash scene as flames erupted into the sky Thursday evening.
The man behind the lens is Jeremy Lockett, a newly self-trained photographer who just started focusing on action shots.
"It was just really, really intense. Really chaotic," Lockett said describing the scene along Interstate 5.
Lockett was heading south on I-5 when he happened upon the crash scene.
"You could see some kind of molten metal coming out of the back of the FedEx trailer" - Lockett
I saw smoke, thought it was a grassfire," Lockett explained as he drove closer to the wreckage.
That's when he realized the severity of the incident.
"People were stopped in the middle of the chaos," Lockett said.
"So I pulled over, then is when it started popping. You could see some kind of molten metal coming out of the back of the FedEx trailer," Lockett said as he reacted to the mangled mess.
"I got out my camera and I started taking pictures. And that's when, even on this side of the freeway, the heat was just really intense. And you could feel it in your throat and lungs," Lockett explained.
"It was pretty surreal. Really loud, the flames were loud"
"It was pretty surreal. Really loud, the flames were loud. There was a lot of popping. There were a lot of little mini explosions. I don't know if it was from the tires or something ... and it was really, really hot. I mean the fire was big but it was hotter that you would have thought," said Lockett as he described backing away from the flames.
"My adrenaline was pumping. I've never been close or seen something of that magnitude … especially in the Orland area. Stuff like that does not happen."
