REDDING, Calif. -

Redding police said 32-year-old Erik Lebak was the man fatally shot by deputies Thursday night.

Dispatch initially received reports of a suicidal subject on the  20000 block of Fig Tree Lane in Redding at 8:05 p.m. Thursday.

When two deputies responded to the home and heard gunshots inside.

After an investigation, police revealed Friday afternoon that Lebak came out of the home armed with a handgun and shotgun.

They said he discharged the shotgun twice in the area of the deputies.

The deputies returned fire, ultimately striking Lebak.

Several neighbors who live in the area said they heard the gunshots last night.

Esther Stryker, who lives next door initially thought it was fireworks, but when she saw the police cars she knew something was wrong.

"Streams of spotlights first, on the church and the house here and then the helicopter so I knew it was serious," explained Stryker.

An ambulance was requested for LeBak, but he was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither deputy was injured and they have been placed on paid administrative leave.

An autopsy is scheduled for next week.
