Police found a body in the Sacramento River Monday afternoon that may be the remains of a man wanted for evading police by jumping from the Market Street Bridge.
The Shasta County Sheriff's Office launched their patrol boat just after 1:30 p.m. after fisherman reported seeing a body in the river near the southern bank close to the posse grounds.
"A fisherman was the one who called dispatch to report that they'd located what they thought was a body," said Lt. Eric Magrini of the Shasta County Sheriff's Office. "[The body was] submerged maybe three to four feet in the water just above [upstream from] the Sundial Bridge."
Officials have transferred the body to the coroner's office for identification.
Police said it is unknown how long the body was in the river but they believe it had been submerged for some time.
"Looks like he's been in the water for quite some time," said Magrini. "There was even some algae on the clothing so it's hard to determine color of clothing, things of that nature."
Police could not confirm whether the body is that of 48-year-old Darryl Cunningham, a man who jumped from the Market Street Bridge while trying to evade police two weeks ago but they did say the location of the body coincides with the case.
"It's a strong possibility the body they pulled from the river is the man who leaped from the Market Street Bridge," said Magrini.
