Police locate suspects in transient beating
Police have located the suspects in an assault on a transient that took place early on Monday morning.
Christopher Avery, 48, a local transient was found naked and unconscious with serious head trauma near the corner of Civic Center Dr. and Cypress Ave.
Officers located suspects using surveillance footage from the Safeway store on Cypress Ave. and it led police to recognizing Brandon E. Sposito, a 26-year-old Redding transient. Officers located Sposito near the Redding Library and detained him for questioning.
During an interview, Sposito told investigators that he was there when Avery was being assaulted but he did not participate. He provided information that led police to identify Jeffrey Fecht, 19, and a 13-year-old boy who is currently living in a local transient camp with his father as the other subjects in the video surveillance.
Investigators learned that Fecht was already in custody for an unrelated felony assault that occurred later on Jun. 24.
On Jun. 26, investigators interviewed the 13-year-old suspect who confirmed that he was with Sposito and Fecht on the night of the incident. He also told officers that they had met Avery at the Safeway on Cypress Ave.
The juvenile said they all participated in the assault and left Avery for dead after an approaching vehicle scared them away.
After the assault, the 13-year-old said that the other suspects rummaged through Avery's pockets after the assault.
Avery remains in serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Mercy Medical Center.
