A Red Bluff man was arrested Thursday, accused of killing his girlfriend's 8-month-old son on Mother's Day. Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston told us the baby was hit numerous times with at least two objects.
Johnston would not discuss which objects or the motive at this time but he described the baby's death as a "brutal murder".
The suspect Brandon Branscombe, 22, was arrested on a murder charge Thursday at 11 a.m.. He was already in custody on an unrelated charge.
Johnston said he may end up with a torture charge as well.
The victim, an 8-month-old boy named Dylan, was found not breathing on May 12 at a home on Byron Avenue in Red Bluff. Dylan later died at the hospital.
Branscombe was caring for the child while the baby's mother was away working. Deputies said she left the baby home with Branscombe at 9:45 a.m. on May 12. When she returned home from work at 1:50 p.m. the baby wasn't breathing. Branscombe and the infant were the only two people home during that time period.
At the time Red Bluff Police arrived, Branscombe was reportedly sleeping in bed in a different room from the infant. Officers performed CPR.
Deputies observed suspicious visible injuries to the infant's head.
Branscombe was in the GPS Alternative Custody Program from the Tehama County Sheriff's Jail for alcohol-related offenses. He was immediately taken into custody and returned to the jail
An autopsy on May 14 determined the cause of death was multiple blunt force traumas to the head.
Detectives have been following leads in the case and on Wednesday, the Tehama County Superior Court issued a warrant for Branscombe's arrest. He is held on $1 million bail.
