Redding bar with a rowdy reputation to lose liquor license
Johnny’s Cathouse will be closing its doors for good on Dec. 2.
The Redding business posted to their Facebook account that the misconduct of a former employee led to them surrendering their liquor license.
The post cites the reason for the surrendering of their license as being due to a single employee selling narcotics to an undercover law enforcement agent.
Brittany Cournyer has been identified as the employee whose alleged actions contributed to the suspension of Johnny’s liquor license.
According to a complaint filed by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, Cournyer possessed or allowed patrons to sell both Ecstasy and LSD on bar premises.
The document outlines seven incidences of these activities starting June 21 and culminating Sept. 28 with Cournyer’s arrest.
The complaint also cites seven times the business permitted illegal sale or negotiations of sales during the same time frame.
ABC officials say that is not the only reason for complaint; there have been several incidents inside, or disturbances in front of the California street bar.
According to ABC that kind of activity did not go unnoticed.
ABC public information officer John Carr said the numerous calls for police service, public drunkenness, fights, and other things of that nature contributed to the closure. Carr called it a drain on police resources with more than 50 calls for police service having been made in a year’s time.
The bar’s liquor license has been suspended indefinitely.
The owner, John Hoeppner, will have sixth months to sell that license to a new owner. However, the new licensee will have to open up their business at a new location.
According to Carr it was Hoeppner who agreed to the penalties after the department met with him, and showed him the numerous accusations against his bar.
Carr referred to the nuisance activity at Johnny’s Cathouse as running a disorderly house.
We reached out to John Hoeppner to get his thoughts on the closure. He was unavailable for comment.
