Shasta Dam celebrates 75 years since beginning construction
It's a week-long celebration for the start of the building of Shasta Dam. Work on the dam started 75 years ago.
There are night tours on Wednesday night and earlier on Wednesday, there was a classic car cruise over the top of the dam.
Most of the cars were classics but they were still a lot younger than the dam. Before the cruise in the afternoon, one of the children of the dam workers celebrated his birthday singing.
Jack Powell from Summit City, as he still calls it, is older than the dam he rode across. He turned 84 this year and his wife and him have fond memories growing up around the construction.
A Cushman scooter club made the trip as well. Every year, between 100 and 150 Cushman owners get together for a state meet at the Shasta District Fairgrounds in Anderson. The dam was a side trip.
