REDDING, Calif. - Jury selection has started for a Palo Cedro man charged with causing a crash that left his two young daughters severely injured.
29-year-old Nicolaas Myrtle was arrested in March when he crashed on Gas Point Road in Cottonwood.
Investigators say Myrtle was under the influence of prescription drugs and medical marijuana.
One of his daughters is now paralyzed from the waist down and the other was badly injured.
Myrtle, who is now out of custody, was in a Shasta County courtroom Tuesday morning as jury selection for his trial began. He seemed calm, but a bit nervous.
The judge went over the jury selection process with him and the attorneys. He then told Myrtle that it is his right to chose whether or not he will testify during his trial.
Myrtle is charged with a DUI resulting in injury and child endangerment.
Jury selection will resume Wednesday morning.
