REDDING, Calif. - Neo-natal care unit nurse, Joann Thorpe, was honored with a national award for her working in saving the life of a baby delivered at just 23 weeks.
Baby Travis only weighed a little more than a pound when he was born. His mother said she could fit her wedding rings over his entire arm.
"I cried," said Thorpe. "I broke down in tears. I had my granddaughter with me, she came up and patted my leg and told me it was alright. I said, 'These are happy tears.'"
Thorpe was also given $2,500 to donate to a health charity of her choice. She chose Mercy's neo-natal unit, opting for two rocker beds for drug-exposed babies.
