Shooting leaves one dead; victim mistaken for burglar

SHINGLETOWN, Calif. - Detectives with the Shasta County Sheriff's Office major crimes unit are investigating an early morning homicide.

It happened around 2:26 a.m. on Pine Meadows Drive off Black Butte Road.

According to investigators, Michael Ackley, 55, was drinking with a friend, James Arnel, 47, and Arnel's mother.

At some point, Arnel and his mother left, but came back to retrieve personal property.

That's when detectives believe Ackley fired as many as ten rounds, thinking Arnel and his mother were burglars.

Arnel was struck and killed. Arnel's mother did not suffer major injuries.

Ackley was arrested and taken to the Shasta County Jail on a charge of murder. His bail has been set at $1 million.
