Suspect, vehicle in hit-and-run located

REDDING, Calif. - Police have located the driver and vehicle they believe hit and critically injured a 16-year-old who was riding his skateboard on Friday night.

Kenneth Reed, 62, of Cedarville, admitted to police he was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash, but thought he hit some sort of animal. He was not arrested, pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's office.

His vehicle, a silver, four-door Subaru, was found in the back parking lot of the Motel 6 on Hilltop Drive. Damage was clearly visible to the left-front corner and windshield.

According to police, Reed hit Mark Vargas, 16, at the intersection of Court Street and Gold Street at around 9:17 p.m. Friday.

Vargas was taken to Mercy Medical Center in critical condition. On Saturday, his mother told KRCR News Channel 7 he had been declared brain dead, but was being kept on life support for organ donation.
