Two lanes of I-5 to close for overpass inspection

Semi-truck collides with Redding interstate overpass

REDDING, Calif. - Two lanes of southbound Interstate 5 will be closed at 10 a.m. Friday to allow crews to inspect the damaged Hartnell Avenue overpass in Redding.

The overpass was damaged when a big rig hit it Thursday night.  Hartnell Avenue remains closed over the interstate.

At 10 a.m. Friday the left and middle lanes of southbound I-5 will be closed just south of Cypress Avenue.  The southbound on-ramp at Cypress Avenue will also be closed.

A semi-truck hit the Hartnell Avenue overpass Redding Thursday around 5:30 p.m.   The truck left a large gash in the concrete and sent chunks of concrete falling onto the interstate.

The driver of the big rig said he was hauling a car crusher, an apparatus used for compressing the remains of a junked car and he was unsure how to lower the machinery to the necessary height requirement. The machine collided with the bridge as he drove under.

He was hauling the machinery from Willow Creek, Calif.
