REDDING, Calif. - A Redding woman was arrested for DUI after a head-on crash on Lake Boulevard in Redding sent her SUV careening into a parking lot.
The collision happened just after 9 a.m. Wednesday at Lake Boulevard and Clay Street on Redding's northwest side.
Police said a white Land Rover crossed the center line on Lake Boulevard and hit another car head-on as it waited to make a left turn. The Land Rover skidded across oncoming traffic, coming to rest on its side in the parking lot of Care Animal Hospital.
The driver Heather McDonald, 47, was later arrested for driving under the influence of prescription medication. Several witnesses heard the crash, including Amber Preston who works nearby. They broke out the windows of the Land Rover to help McDonald who was trapped inside.
"We pulled the bars off the roof, and pulled the sunroof open," said Preston. "We broke the door back so it would stay open, so he could crawl inside. They we talked with her to keep her conscious until they got here."
The other vehicle, a Kia Optima, was pushed backwards about 100 feet onto a sidewalk on the opposite side of the street. A man and woman in that vehicle were also taken to the hospital.
The driver Tia Matthews, 32, and the passenger Larry Walker, 67, were treated for minor injuries.
