Traffic was backed up on Highway 99 in central Chico Friday afternoon after a chain reaction crash that sent an SUV flipping and rolling onto an entrance ramp 30 feet below.
The collision happened around 2 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Highway 99 at East 1st Avenue.
KRCR News Channel 7 Daybreak anchor Kelli Saam was one of the first on the scene. The crash happened just a few car-lengths in front of her vehicle. She noticed the a cloud of dust coming from where an SUV had rolled down a dusty embankment to the on-ramp below.
Danny Leesman saw the crash. He said traffic suddenly slowed, a Toyota sedan read-ended another vehicle. The Honda Element SUV went flipping over the Toyota, then rolled down the embankment.
The Honda Element landed on its side on the southbound on-ramp. Witnesses helped the driver, a man in his 50's or 60's, get out the crashed vehicle before medics arrived.
The crash scene is in a Highway 99 construction zone where the posted speed limit slows to 50 miles per hour. Crews have been working for several months on a project to widen the highway.
A sedan sat stopped on Highway 99 with major front end damage. The female driver of that car remained in the driver's seat and was conscious.
