Sycamore Pool in Bidwell Park is filled to the brim in time for Memorial Day Weekend. But lifeguards will not be on duty until the following weekend.
The City of Chico doesn't have enough lifeguards staffed. Ruben Martinez, the director of Public Works for the city says there are currently 10 applicants with qualifying certificates. Usually there are 16 by this time.
Many parents, however, say it won't affect their swimming plans because they already keep a keen on eye on their kids anyway.
"It's disappointing, but in my personal situation my daughter doesn't like going swimming at One Mile without me or her dad with her," said Jeanne Greene. "So the lifeguards to us is not a make-it-or-break-it situation."
