The breach of credit and debit card data at Target has many people worried in the Northstate.
Many local shoppers said they are now thinking twice when it comes to using credit cards or debit cards.
“I don't have a lot of extra money so I don't want what I have taken," said regular Target customer Jennifer Paver.
Paver said she has experienced debit fraud before, which is why this makes her very nervous.
"Somebody had used my card but they had caught it immediately and took care of it for me," said Paver.
Melissa Lyric is another regular customer who said shes experienced debit fraud twice.
"I had to file a police report and go through all that and then show my bank that it wasn't me," said Lyric.
The news of the massive breach has made many become aware.
Josh Markle the Marketing Manager of MEMBERS 1st Credit Union said compromised accounts happen a lot especially during the holidays.
Markle said there are things you can do if youre worried.
One of those solutions is the wait and see approach, where you check your bank statements constantly for any suspicious activity along with checking your credit score.
The other solution, the proactive approach where you contact your financial institution and request your current card to be blocked and then replaced.
Markle said to keep an eye out, because even if you don’t see anything happening in your account, it can months later.
“Don't be fooled if you don't see fraudulent activity right away, continue to monitor that and look to have your card replaced or reissued to you," said Markle.
It’s also important to keep in mind that different banks have different protocols. Some will not hold the customer accountable if their accounts are compromised, others will.
