RANCHO TEHAMA, Calif. - Five people are dead and another 10 are injured following a mass shooting in Rancho Tehama.
One of the injured victims is 6-year-old Alejandro Hernandez, who was shot twice, once in the chest. Hernandez remains in critical condition at UC Davis.
Alondra Cruz-Mendoza is Hernandez's cousin. She said that about 8 a.m. law enforcement called to tell them to lock their doors and shelter in place. At the same time she said they were still unsure of what was going on, so she called a family member who said she had heard gunshots when she was near the school.
That is when Cruz-Mendoza learned through her sister on Facebook that Hernandez had been shot and was in the hospital.
"He was hit two times. He was hit on his right foot and in his chest and he still has a bullet in his chest so they're trying to do more tests to see how they're going to take it out without harming him but it didn't hit any of his major organs which is, thank God." said Cruz-Mendoza. "It's crazy because these are people that we know, it's not random people, it's not a big city everybody knows each other it's a family member so it does it hurts"
Cruz-Mendoza said the family had already gone through traumatic times this year after losing their house in a fire and now the second youngest son of six children has been shot. She added that family is all they really have and all they can do is be there for one another in such a tough time.
