Torres Shelter Breaks Ground on New Addition
The Torres Shelter in Chico broke ground Tuesday for a kitchen and dining room. It's a project that's been in the works for 10 years.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held at the shelter at 101 Silver Dollar Way. Executive Director of the Torres Shelter Brad Montgomery said it's a significant step for the shelter.
"This effort has been incredibly rewarding and educational," said Montgomery. "I've learned quite a lot about the work and attention to detail that goes into a successful construction project and have come to understand that it is only possible when individuals and organizations step up and decide they want to better their community."
He added, "Finally having a full kitchen, more space for recreational and educational activities hosted at the Shelter and providing people the simple dignity of being able to sit down inside to enjoy their evening meal are just some of the improvements this construction project will have on our ability to help people escape homelessness."
Funding for the construction project was secured through the City of Chico's CDBG Capital Development Fund and the Emergency Housing Assistance Program.
