CHICO, Calif. -

The train tracks through Central Chico were blocked Friday morning after a train hit an empty vehicle which police now say was stolen sometime during the night or early morning hours.

Chico Police said the Union Pacific train collided with the car at 6:45 a.m.

All railroad crossings south of West Sacramento Ave. were closed for more than an hour and half.

The train started moving out of the area around 8:20 a.m.

Police said they believe that the suspect(s) attempted to drive across the tracks with the car, but lodged the front fires of the vehicle in the tracks and the suspect(s) abandoned the vehicle.

When officers told the registered owner of the vehicle what happened, the owner was unaware that the car had been stolen.

The black Jeep Cherokee sport utility vehicle was totaled. Anyone with information can call the Chico Police Dept.
