REDDING, Calif. -

Police are investigating after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a train in downtown Redding on Friday night.

It happened around 9:46 p.m. between the Yuba Street and Tehama Street railroad crossings.

According to investigators, the pedestrian was traveling northbound along the southbound train tracks. The train was unable to stop and hit the pedestrian, who died at the scene.

Downtown railroad crossings were blocked by the stopped train while Redding police awaited the Coroner's Office as well as investigators from Union Pacific Police. They re-opened around 11:30 p.m.

Police have not released the identity of the man who was hit, pending notification of next-of-kin.
