LAKEHEAD, Calif. -

The holiday weekend ended with a major traffic headache for thousands of people on their way home on southbound Interstate 5 in Shasta County.    Traffic near Lakehead was backed up by the construction on the new bridge.

Caltrans has reduced traffic to one lane in the construction zone.  But with the increased traffic for the holiday, it translated into major delays.

One driver said it took three hours to travel nine miles, which is an average of 3 miles an hour.  That's  the same as the average walking speed.

Viewers reported that drivers were passing on the shoulder as traffic was backed up for about 20 miles.
