Shasta County nonprofit Wings of Angels helps families with children suffering from a life threatening illness.
The organization is currently supporting 26 families, and they rely 100 percent on donations to keep their mission going. The founders of Wings of Angels, Donna and Dan Araiza, refer to themselves as the wings of their organization.
“All the children we help are the angels,” said Dan.
They started their nonprofit 12 years ago, after losing their daughter Alyssa to leukemia.
“It’s a way of keeping Alyssa’s memory alive and helping us heal every day,” said Donna.
Since 2002, the organization has helped more than 170 families. With the help of the community, they have raised a total of $750,000, being able to provide financial support for items like gas, groceries and utility bills. In addition, the couple offers emotional support.
They say their daughter Alyssa gave them the strength to carry out their mission. Plus, they have started a movement of paying it forward.
“Inspire them to do something to help the community to help other families,” said Dan.
Wings of Angels supports families in Tehama, Shasta, Trinity, Siskiyou, Modoc and Lassen Counties. They’ll be having their twelfth annual bowl-a-thon fundraiser this weekend. It will be Saturday at Shasta Lanes in Redding from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more details on the organization, visit their website: http://www.alyssaswingsofangels.org/
