Husband of missing woman arraigned on animal cruelty charges

On Monday Zir Weems was arraigned on charges of animal cruelty including a felony count of subjecting an animal to needless suffering. The Glenn County Sheriff's Office believes Mr. Weems hung two of his own Rottweilers -- one which was killed -- on his grandmother's property in Willows.

"Through investigation we know that he is the one who transported the dogs over to his grandmother's house and left them there," said Glenn County Sheriff Larry Jones. "And he is allegedly the one that tied the animals to the tree."

The dogs were found one week prior to his wife's disappearance, when Zir Weems was found on a lot next to his grandmother's house in Willows bleeding from self-inflicted wounds.  He's currently in the Glenn County Jail on the animal cruelty charges.

Meanwhile the search for Zir Weems's wife, Angelica, continued.   Willows Police moved its search further north having no success searching Willows and nearby areas.  A Willows K-9 covered a large area at a park south of Hamilton City off Highway 45.
"We're grasping at straws out of the haystack, and just picking one (area) each day, trying a different place," said Kelly Kuwata of the Willows Police Deptartment. "We know [Zir and Angelica Weems] were from Chico and Willows, so we're just trying to search places of where she might be."

Zir Weems has legal counsel for the animal cruelty charges, but is not a suspect or a person of interest in the disappearance of Angelica Weems.
