Man accused of arson on train tracks

REDDING, Calif. - A Redding man is accused of stealing flares from a Union Pacific train then setting a small fire on the train tracks.

CAL FIRE law enforcement arrested 24-year-old Michael May Sunday night after they said he stole road flares and sparked two small fires in the area of Sutton Road in north Redding.

According to investigators May approached a Union Pacific engineer while he was in a train and asked for several flares.

When the engineer told May no he allegedly entered the cab of another train and stole several flares.

Investigators said he then lit at least two small fires, one of those on the train tracks.

A Shasta County Sheriff's deputy who was in the area said he saw May ignite one of the fires.
